The 54 days of lockdown affecting the movement of blood donors across the country had led to the shortage in availability of blood for patients, depending on transfusion as a life-saving measure. The Health Ministry had even issued an advisory calling for voluntary blood donations. Since there continues to be a demand for blood and blood components, especially for thalassemia, haemophilia, blood cancer patients, it is essential that supplies of safe blood be maintained at licensed blood centres in the country. There is a huge scarcity of blood in all state blood banks due to lockdown with certain guidelines like maintaining the social distance, sanitization etc. accorded by the competent authorities in the state. So many emergency operations get cancelled due to shortage of blood, which leads to death of the patients as there is no option of blood to save the life.
Considering this fact, NKCF of Sunny Fort, Action Area-II B, Newtown came forward to initiate a blood donation camp at their complex on May 16th,2020 in collaboration with the State Blood Transfusion Council, West Bengal, within a very short notice . The Barasat Blood Bank, with a team of 7, had conducted the camp and 43 life savers voluntarily donated. Mr. Asif Khan, along with his daughter and son, donated blood for the noble cause and understanding the necessity of blood at that present scenario by skipping their Fast for Ramadan.
Dr. Sankar Dasmahapatra, Dr. Tapas Karmakar, Shri Soham Ghosh, Ritesh Dalmia, Prativa Dalmia, Sana Khan, Humza Khan and Sourabh Mishra were very much excited for being a first time life-saver. As well as many ladies also came forward to donate blood voluntarily even in this tough time. The fellow residents of the complex also participated whole heartedly for this noble cause. There being a revised Directive of the State Government at that point of time, a maximum of 50 persons were allowed for blood donation in any community hall of the complex, during the lockdown period.
NKCF organized a one day free medical camp for COVID-19 screening and general health check up in association with HIDCO and NKDA, Government of West Bengal on September 6th, 2020 at Eco Urban Village, Newtown, Kolkata.
163 migrant labours at the construction sites, domestic helps, drivers and security personnel were screened for COVID-19 and general check-up was done by doctors from various disciplines. Dr. Sankar Dasmahapatra- Reputed Gynecologist in the city, Dr. Dipankar Roy- Renowned Surgeon in G.I. surgery and attached to Calcutta Medical College, Dr. Achintya Mitra- An Ayurvedic Physician, Dr. Tapas Karmakar- Consultant Pediatrician & Neonatologist, Dr. Srabani Dasmahapatra- Consultant Anesthesiologist, Dr. Anirban Biswas- Specialist in Medicine, Dr. Gopal Ghosh- General Physician, were present in the health camp. The programme was inaugurated by Shri Debashis Sen, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, HIDCO and Chairman, Newtown Kolkata Development Authority.
Saplings of auspicious Tulsi plants were offered to all guests during the inauguration. Shri Debashis Sen highlighted the importance of preventive health as a whole in the society and as to why this kind of medical camps is important in the present new normal situation. He has mentioned the need of Ayurveda Medicine for the preventive health in the society and emphasized the role of natural products which are being used in Ayurveda which plays a positive role in improving the body immunity as well as personal quality of life. The organising team also offered masks, hand sanitizers, free consultation, compliance of COVID-19 screening, free medicines in proper scheduled doses and food packets to the visitees. The suspected cases were referred to the NKDA testing centres for further assessment.
The inauguration programme of the 'Amaloki Bon' project as a part of Post-Amphan Re-greening drive at the most devastated area of Newtown was organized by Newtown Kolkata Care Foundation in association with Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) and Newtown Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA), Government of West Bengal at Action area -III, Newtown, Kolkata on September 13th,2020.
Shri Debashis Sen, IAS, Chairman-cum-Managing Director, HIDCO and Chairman, NKDA had inaugurated the project and a group of higher officials of HIDCO and NKDA also graced this occasion. This project held a unique role to popularize afforestation by plantation in the post-amphan restoration of greenery, mitigation of pollution, combating Covid-19
situation, rejuvenation and promoting of indigenous medicinal plants all in unison.
We also aimed to popularize the importance of plantation among the mass, especially medicinal plantation, to improve the green environment and combat the deforestation as well.
Dr. Sankar Dasmahapatra , Chairman, NKCF and a leading gynecologist of the city, also mentioned the reason for choosing Amaloki plants for plantation in the 'Amaloki Bon'.
Dr. Achintya Mitra, an Ayurvedic Physician and Scientist - Central Ayurveda Research Institute for Dug Development, Kolkata, also mentioned the importance of amaloki for health care.
It boosts up immunity as it contains 700mg of Vitamin-C in 100gms of Amaloki pulp, being richest source of Vitamin-C. Amaloki plants have many more advantages like any other medicinal plants compared to other ornamental plants. Dr. Mitra also mentioned that the census of medicinal plants in New Town, urgently needed for conservation and preservation of valuable plants.
Shri Debashis Sen appreciated the innovative idea of this plantation project and suggested the name given by the organization, i.e. 'Amaloki Bon'. He also mentioned that with this initiative of NKCF, NKDA also reached the 10,000 plantation target as 6000 plants were destroyed due to super cyclone Amphan.
He also made an appeal to develop an income generating programme on food processing and to
train the youth of the locality. NKCF aims to plant 200 such plants in the one acre land initially.
